Just like any other exterior surface, doors need cleaning and care each year. Finish life varies, and the amount of moisture, direct sunlight and accumulation of dust or soil all affect the finish. In severe weather exposure, finish life may be about a year. For homes with entries protected from sun and moisture, finishes may last many years.
Periodic inspection and maintenance will keep your door looking great and provide proper protection against the elements. When inspecting your door here are some signs to watch for:
- Hairline cracks in the top coat of finish.
- Changes in the color of the finish.
- Changes in the texture of the finish, such as flaking, scaling, raised grain, or a “dry” feeling.
- Dullness or chalkiness in the finish.
Occasionally inspect your doors for any of these conditions. If any of them appear, it is important to restore the finish immediately.
To properly restore the finish, please follow these steps carefully:
Lightly sand, and then wipe away dust with a clean cloth, slightly dampened with mineral spirits.
Apply at least two coats of fade-resistant exterior polyurethane with an ultraviolet inhibitor (following the manufacturer's recommendations). Sand lightly between coats.
Finish all six sides of the door.
You have made a significant investment in your property by purchasing a handcrafted wood door. Following these simple steps will help its beauty last for years to come.
